The elbow tendons are rarely inflamed in Tennis Elbow. This comes as a shock to most people because we are all familiar with the term 'tendon-itis' which suggests that tendon problems are always caused by inflammation.
Unfortunately this has been shown to be not true. Think about this...
Most people who suffer tendon pain soon realise that the commonly used treatments like Anti-Inflammatory tablets and creams, steroid injections and resting the elbow do not provide long term relief. These treatments may give you some short term relief, but the pain often returns days or weeks later.
And now we know why. Research has shown time and time again that there are no inflammatory cells at the site of Tennis Elbow Pain. Researchers have taken biopsies of the painful tendons and when they've looked at the tendon under the microscope they have never found inflammatory cells.
Current scientific thinking is that tendons become weaker and more frayed as we age. Too little use of the tendon and it will weaken further. Suddenly overloading the tendon with too great a weight will cause tearing and damage to the tendon.
Tendons also need regular exercise and use in order to remain strong because tendons have a poor blood supply, and parts of the tendon don't even have a blood supply at all.
If you have Tennis Elbow it is more likely that your tendon has become painful because it has weakened and become torn, from being overstrained.
The key to your recovery is to strengthen your tendon by performing simple but specific exercises called 'eccentric exercises'.
The term eccentric exercise (pronounced 'E -sentric') describes a very specific type of exercise that has been shown to stress a muscle and it's tendon the greatest amount.
When we exercise eccentrically we are allowing the muscle to lengthen, under load. A good example is running down hill. This is guaranteed to make your thighs sore the next couple of days if you are unaccustomed to doing such things.
This is because the thigh muscles have had to work eccentrically, to lower your body down the hill. Researchers have found that tendons build up strength fastest if we exercise them eccentrically.
All scientifically based tendon rehabililtation systems emphasise eccentric exercise over other types. The core of my Tennis Elbow system is based around scientifically proven eccentric exercises.
