Elbow Pain can mean any one of a number of very different problems, and not just Tennis Elbow.

The common mistake people make is to assume that they have Tennis Elbow when they have any Elbow Pain at all around the elbow region. Quite often in my work,  I see people confusing Tennis Elbow Pain with Golfer's Elbow.

Of course it naturally follows that a wrong 'diagnosis' leads to wrong treatment. In some cases this can lead to inappropriate and occasionally dangerous treatments. So let's work through this carefully, so that we are sure that you do have Tennis Elbow.

There are three main problems or 'pathologies' as we call them that can cause Elbow Pain.

  • Bursitis

  • Golfer's Elbow

  • Tennis Elbow.

Let's deal with those that are NOT Tennis Elbow first.

Bursitis.

A bursa is a fluid filled sac. Inflammation of a bursa is called bursitis. A bursa is a normal anatomical structure. They exist around many of our joints. There are 14 around the knee for instance, indeed you may have heard of Housemaid's Knee. This is simply inflammation of the bursa (called 'bursitis') on top of the kneecap.

The main bursitis that affects the elbow is - a bit of a mouthful this one - Olecranon Bursitis. There is a bursa behind the elbow called the Olecranon Bursa. This can become swollen and inflamed from repeated pressure or trauma, such as a fall onto the elbow.

If the elbow is red, swollen and hot in this same area, there may be an infection in the bursa that requires antibiotics. Olecranon Bursitis is very rare and I only see a couple of cases year in the clinic, if that. If you are unsure, then get the elbow checked over by a Doctor or Physiotherapist.

To summarise our look at bursitis, just bear in mind that there will be no significant swelling with Tennis Elbow. So if you do have swelling around the back of your elbow then it is most probably Bursitis.

Golfer's Elbow.

This is a very similar problem to Tennis Elbow and the background and causes are similar, although Golfer's Elbow is not as common as Tennis Elbow.

With Golfer's Elbow, the pain is felt on the INSIDE of the elbow. Also, because different muscles and tendons are affected, the treatment is different to that for Tennis Elbow. In Golfer's Elbow it is the inside of the elbow that is affected. With the arm outstretched, it is the little finger or pinky side of your forearm that is affected.

Okay so that has excluded the two main problems that can occur at the elbow.
